How bathroom sinks become clogged
Your bathroom sink is designed to handle water and a few soap bubbles, but not much else. Any solid materials or grimy substances that enter the drain have the potential to cause a clog. These include hair, bits of soap, chunks of toothpaste and other debris.
To help keep your bathroom sink free of clogs, follow these tips:
- Install a hair trap over the drain. Empty this trap regularly into the trash to remove collected debris.
- Run hot water down the drain for several seconds if debris ever enters the drain to help it pass through the plumbing without sticking to the pipe walls and creating a clog.
- Pour a few tablespoons of baking soda down the drain followed by a cup of vinegar. Let the bubbling mixture sit for a few minutes, and then chase it with boiling water. This simple bit of maintenance helps keep the drain clear.

How to unclog your bathroom sink
Before you call one of our expert plumbers to take a look, you can attempt a few do-it-yourself drain-clearing methods:
- Twist and lift the pop-up stopper from the drain (or remove the horizontal pivot rod from under the sink, if necessary). Remove hair from the stopper to help water flow faster down the drain.
- Insert a drain stick down the drain and twist to get a good grip on the debris. Pull the drain stick back out and discard any material it managed to snag. Run hot water down the drain to wash away any loosened debris.
- Plunge the drain to help force the blockage out of the way. Be sure to tape over the overflow opening to focus the force of the plunging toward the clog.
- Remove and clean the P-trap to hopefully find and clear out the clog. Place a bucket under both connections of the trap and unscrew the slip nuts securing the trap in place. Dump water from the detached trap into the bucket and scrub it out with a bottle brush. Check the trap for corrosion or wear and replace it if necessary.
When to call a plumber
Sometimes even your best efforts can’t remove the most difficult sink clogs. Instead of resorting to drain cleaning chemicals that can damage your pipes, call in a plumber to get the job done. Our plumbers use professional drain augers and other tools to push even the deepest clogs out of your pipes.
