How a Packaged Gas Furnace & Air Conditioner System Works
With a packaged gas furnace and air conditioner system, the evaporator coil, condenser, and compressor are all located in a single cabinet, usually placed on a concrete slab next to your home’s foundation. Air supply and return ducts come from the inside of you house, through the roof, or through an exterior wall to connect with the packaged furnace and air conditioner.
Packaged gas furnace and air conditioners are available in 3, 5, 7, 10, and 15-ton capacities and can make up for the smaller capacities of window mounted air conditioners, while providing heating and cooling for homes where full central heating and air conditioning systems would be too large.

Types of Packaged Gas Furnace & Air Conditioner Systems
There are two kinds of systems we recommend: a system with water cooled condensers and one with air cooled condensers. Here is a brief description of both:
- Packaged gas furnace and air conditioning systems with water cooled condensers – These types of packaged gas furnace and air conditioning systems consist of a shell and tube style condenser that has refrigerant flowing along the tube side and cooling water flowing through the shell. The condenser is housed in the same metal box as the rest of the components in the system.
- Packaged gas furnace and air conditioning systems with air cooled condensers – In packaged gas furnace and air condition systems that have air cooled condensers, the outdoor unit has a fan that brings in outside air and blows it over the condensing coil, cooling the coil. Packaged gas furnaces and air conditioners are more commonly cooled with air than water, as it can be difficult to maintain the constant flow of water necessary to cool the condenser. As with the water cooled condenser, the air cooling system is housed directly within the box where all of the other components are stored.
Benefits of a Packaged Gas Furnace & Air Conditioner
There are a number of benefits to installing a new packaged gas furnace and air conditioner. For one thing, having both the furnace and air conditioner packaged together outside saves precious space inside your home. You will also hear much less noise since there are no noisy indoor units turning on and off.
Certain packaged gas furnaces and air conditioners in both lines qualify for the government’s energy tax credit as well.
